Immersion-South East Asian Rainforest was planned to house animal species from that region and provide visitors with face-to-face encounters with the animals in their natural environment.
Stage 1 was completed in 1995, showcasing our Siamangs, White-cheeked Gibbons, Dusky Langurs, Malayan Tapirs and Malayan Sunbears. The tapirs and langurs live in and around the gigantic Morton Bay Fig tree without any physical barriers to separate them.
Stage 2 was completed in 2006 and provided a new home for two critically endangered species, the Sumatran orangutan and the Sumatran tiger. Designed as lowland rainforest, the sloped exhibits bring the animals to the same height as the visitor. Two tall climbing structures accommodate the arboreal nature of orangutans, with ropes allowing the primates to move between platforms.
By removing the barriers, Immersion-Southeast Asia Rainforest shifts from the traditional exhibit design into the world of immersion.
