More on Cross Fostering

Tonight we are doing our first cross foster procedure.  The tiny little joey gets flown down and a staff member will meet the plane at the airport and bring the joey back to the zoo.  To transport such a tiny delicate animal, they place it in a warm, moist, specially designed container with a thermometer to regulate the temperature and transport it immediately to the zoo.

When the joey arrives, the vet, Dr David Schultz, will be waiting with the surrogate Yellow Footed Rock Wallaby. She will be anaesthetised for the procedure as we need them very still.

With very tiny forceps the mothers teat is placed into the joeys mouth and the joey will have its first drink from its new mother and stayed attached to her teat until much bigger in size.
