Orang-utan Arriving at the Adelaide Zoo
MEDIA RELEASE
Today Zoos South Australia is pleased to announce the arrival of a female Sumatran Orang-utan at Adelaide Zoo as part of the international breeding program. Puspa will be making the journey via Adelaide Airport from Perth Zoo with her keeper who will also assist in settling her into her new home alongside Karta and Kluet at Adelaide Zoo.
Adelaide Zoo Primate Keeper Jodie Ellen says she is very excited for the arrival of the new female and has hopes she will breed with male orang-utan, Kluet. “Orang-utans are critically endangered in the wild due to the destruction of their natural habitat, largely due to the clearing of land for palm oil plantations, which directly contributes to the loss of 50 orang-utans per week. As a result Zoo breeding programs are vital for the survival of this species. It is hoped that Puspa and Kluet will successfully breed in time which has the added advantage of giving Karta a chance to see a proven breeding orangutan mum in action.”
Throughout the excitement Ms. Ellen says she is also eager to see how Karta and Kluet will respond to the new arrival. “I have high hopes that all three orang-utans will be happy with the new situation and I am keen to introduce Kluet and Puspa once Puspa has had time to settle into her new home,” says Ms. Ellen.
Puspa will spend her first few weeks off exhibit while she settles into her new home and will be on public display in the coming weeks.
Female Orang-utan, Puspa was born at Perth Zoo in 1975. She had bred successfully at Perth Zoo and Adelaide Zoo keepers are excited to get to know her personality. Female Orang-utan, Karta, was born at San Diego Zoo in 1982. She is a determined and smart individual who loves all food, especially when she steals it from Kluet. Kluet was born at Jersey Zoo (United Kingdom) in 1995. He came to Adelaide via Taronga Zoo in April 2007. He is a very smart and cheeky little bloke, and very easy to train. A young male, he came out of his shell once he was introduced to Karta and has become more confident.
