MEDIA RELEASE

The official countdown is about to begin to the first public appearance of Giant pandas Wang Wang and Funi’s at Adelaide Zoo with the launch of a Giant panda countdown clock today.

The huge 6m x 4m panda–shaped clock is attached to the side of the ETSA Utilities building on Anzac Highway.

It has been designed and engineered by ETSA Utilities workers and will be lit by LED lights to minimise energy consumption and maximise visual impact.

CEO Lew Owens said the launch represented the beginning of a 10 year partnership between ETSA Utilities and Zoos SA.

“The countdown clock is a really unique way of expressing our support for Zoos SA, and the pandas in particular. The pandas will be a boon for the South Australian tourism industry and a great opportunity to show off our wonderful State to visitors,” Mr Owens said.

“In the future, who knows what the clock might be used for? We hope one day it might be counting down to the arrival of panda cubs!”

Dr Chris West, CEO of Zoos SA said “we love the concept of the countdown clock and believe it will really help build momentum around the arrival of Wang Wang and Funi.”

“We’re thrilled ETSA Utilities is helping us keep the community informed about when they will catch their first glimpse of Australia’s Giant pandas,” Dr West said.

Wang Wang and Funi are due to arrive in Australia mid-October when they will go into quarantine until their first public appearance on the 14th December.
