< BackUpdate on Matilda
Thank God I don’t have to get up at night for Matilda anymore! I’ve moved her out of my room now, she’s been out for about a month because she was waking up at 3 or 4am to play. Sometimes I can still hear her next door but she doesn’t call out for me so she’s obviously okay.
She hasn’t been as playful lately, she’s been a bit sick for the last few weeks. She dropped a bit of weight, reached over a kilo and then went under, and is now back up again. It was a bit stressful during that time, as I didn’t know whether she would crash and die as koalas are so sensitive. But now she seems a bit brighter.
She had a few health checks over than time – she was xrayed all over to check if there were any issues (her mum was hit by a car so we wanted to make sure Matilda had no broken bones) and came up clear. She had blood taken twice, one came back with high levels to indicated something was going on in her kidneys so she was put on medication to stabilise her. More bloods will be taken this week.
Recently she’s been given a “special” milk drink, which means we mix some faeces of our other koala, Cricket, into Matilda’s milk. The healthy koalas’ droppings get good bacteria into Matilda’s stomach, to help her process her food better and get rid of the bad bacteria. She doesn’t like it much though!
Small changes in Matilda’s behaviour don’t really bother me. I just talk with the vets and leave it to them to make a judgement. Because she’s young I know things will change a lot in her routine. She’s very bright today so that’s a good sign she’s heading in the right direction.
Bye for now,
Liza
