Orangutan Blankets
We all love to snuggle up with a blanket on a cold winter’s day and the orangutans are no different!
Both Kluet and Karta enjoying playing with blankets or hessian sacks and these items can provide hours of fun for them as they cover their heads with the sacks and blankets or wrestle with each other under the blankets.
On rainy days, the orangutans will even use the sacks like an umbrella as they move about the exhibit or from under the shelters. Often they have playful tug-of-wars with them as well which generally leaves the blankets a bit worse for wear but no matter how torn up the blankets get, Kluet and Karta can still find a use for them, with often even the smallest piece ending up being used as nesting material.
So, because they love their blankets and sacks so much we even put them out in the exhibit for the orangutans on warmer days as well, and both orangutans can be seen using the blankets and sacks as beds when they have a siesta and soak up the sunshine.
Something as simple as a sack or blanket provides a lot of enrichment for the orangutans as they can use it in so many ways and it keeps them busy all day!
