Persistence and Patience - Orangutan Style
One thing that you can definitely say about Karta is that once she has an idea in her head, she will do whatever it takes to make it happen!
Last night, as Karta was coming into her bedroom area after a day lazing in the spring sunshine, she spotted half a coconut that was in the siamang bedrooms which had rolled right up alongside the door that separates the orangutan area from the siamang area.
The area under the door is around 2cm high and I am sure most of you can picture what half a coconut looks like.
Much to my amusement, Karta was determined to try and get this coconut through this little gap. She twisted and turned and contorted her body in every possible way trying to get a good enough grip on the coconut to drag it under the door. When this didn’t work she searched her bedrooms for any kind of tool she could to help her - she tried every stick she could, even modifying their shape to see if that would help.
Karta was so intent on getting the coconut that she was barely interested in her dinner, only every now and again getting up to come over and have a piece of apple or pear before heading straight back to her coconut. Kluet must have found it just as amusing as I did, as he barely took his eyes of her waiting for her to get her prize, although Kluet was happy to munch on his dinner while watching Karta.
After half an hour it was time for me to go home so I bid them good night and left Karta on her back trying still to squeeze the coconut under the door.
Well, low and behold, this morning I walked into the building to find a very proud looking Karta and where there was a half a coconut yesterday, there were now only small bits of coconut shell and lots of sticks lying around.
I have no idea how long into the night she worked on the coconut, but her persistence paid off and in the end she got her prize. I wonder if Kluet got to share in her bounty???
