Puspa's Arrival
Well, Puspa is here and has spent her first week here at Adelaide Zoo.
On the night she arrived Puspa came flying out of her transport box obviously very happy to have some space and a good stretch. She immediately started checking out her new surrounds munching on apples, grapes and lettuce. Puspa climbed all around her new bedroom, hanging from the roof and having a good look at everything.
It took about 15 minutes for Kluet and Karta to brave coming into the building to check out the new arrival. They were probably nervous when they saw the transport box wondering who it was for – I am sure they did not expect Puspa be waiting inside!
It was wonderful to see how relaxed the 3 animals were watching each other across the corridor of the building. Within 5 minutes it was like they had known each other for years!!
The next morning Puspa was a bit unsure of everything. She was very slow to get out of her very comfortable looking nest and did not want to eat her breakfast – but then again she may have still been on Perth time and wondering why on earth we were waking her up at 5am (Western Australia is 2.5hrs behind South Australia).
Puspa is currently in quarantine just to be safe to make sure that none of the orangutans are carrying any viruses that may show up later but all going well that should only last 2 weeks.
It has been great to watch and learn about Puspa’s personality. She is amazingly tall for an orangutan and she is very slender weighing around 40kg. Puspa likes to walk upright a lot of the time and her favourite foods are celery and broccoli!!
As yet we don’t have an exact date as to when Puspa will be in able to go out in the exhibit and be seen by visitors as this will all depend on the length of the quarantine period and how they are all settling in but we will definitely keep you posted.
