Enrichment Day Wrap
On Saturday 26th February, Adelaide Zoo hosted an all day showcase of animal enrichment activities designed to stimulate zoo animals’ ‘wild’ behaviours and enhance their lives.
Enrichment is an everyday part of zoo life however on this special day we gave the public a chance to see a wide range of species receiving their treats and the chance to make enrichment themselves.
Our behavioural enrichment programs give the animals the opportunity to display species appropriate behaviours. Watching Mujambi, the magnificent male lion, stalk and kill a huge papier-mâché ball and have loads of fun doing it was fantastic. While burying a pumpkin with honey filled holes encourages the sun bears to use their impressive sense of smell and digging skills to unearth it.
These are some of the ways keepers provide stimulation to animals to help increase activity levels and problem solving skills which they would use in the wild.
It was also a great opportunity for Adelaide Zoo’s dedicated team of animal enrichment volunteers to showcase their work.
