Hello I’m Dave and I’m the zoo photographer.
I photograph the zoo animals, zoo staff and the zoo grounds for use by the Adelaide and Monarto Zoo. The images appear in zoo publications, on the zoo website and in any media the zoo uses to promote the animals and conservation.
Some of the photographs were easy to capture with the animal doing exactly what I needed. More often than not though the animal would look away or stand when I needed an animal sitting or sitting when I needed the animal standing. Who was it that said 'never work with animals'?
Having said all that I have been very privileged to be close to and interact with some amazing animals both large and small, exotic and animals native to Australia.
Over the coming months I will talk about the experiences I have had in photographing the animals at the Adelaide and Monarto Zoo. I will try and convey some of the joys and problems with photographing the animals at times but always highlighting how amazing and beautiful the animals truly are.

Your photography is stunning David. Not only that you are an approachable person for a photographer on the amateurish side to talk to when at the zoo. Your love of the animals is so very apparent and their trust in you is as well. Absolutely love your photography.

It's always great fun visiting the zoo to photograph the animals. I have zoo membership so I can do that whenever I have time. I'm sure like me you love and enjoy photographing the animlas. My favourites have to be the meerkats , karta and the lemur.

Almost one year on - your photography is still an inspiration to this amateurish photographer. I look forward to seeing it in the zoo magazines etc. When I view your photos and also when I look through my own camera lens I am continually and personally convinced that the animals in both Adelaide and Monarto are really well adapted and adjusted to captive life. Taking my time - and I really do almost become part of the scenery - when taking photographs also has revealed about how caring and responsive the zoo keepers are to their charges and how dedicated the volunteers are. Your ability to frame some unbelievably good photographs indicates how skilled and respectful of the animals you are too. So proud of the Zoos SA.

Hi Dave,
Beautiful photographs, your passion here is obviously the same as it was many years ago with squash. Keep it up.
