Monarto Restoration Project

Get Involved

Our aim is to restore and expand habitat at Monarto to represent what used to exist in the region, before clearing for agriculture and introduction of pest species to the area. With volunteer help, we aim to reduce impact of pests and reintroduce native species that are now locally extinct.

You can get involved in on-ground conservation works and build skills and experience in conservation. There are a range of activities to suit individual skills and abilities, with many of these activities child friendly.

Work includes planting, seed harvesting, propagation, establishing and conducting bio-surveys, weed control, and maintenance and construction of facilities.

Upcoming Dates

  • Sunday, 6th May Field Day
  • Sunday, 3rd June, Planting Festival Family Day

Field days are usually held on the first Sunday of each month. Meeting point is at the Front Gate at Monarto Zoo at 9.30am, with the day finishing between 3 - 4pm. Attendance is free and equipment for tasks is supplied. You will need to bring suitable outdoor work clothes and a packed lunch.

To book your place, email mrpvolunteer@zoossa.com.au.  Please include total numbers and emergency contact number.

Restore - Monarto Planting Festival

Be part of bringing back the bush at Restore - the Monarto Planting Festival!  As part of the Monarto Restoration Program, we invite you to lend a helping hand to restore the habitat at Monarto so native species that used to thrive in the region can be successfully re-introduced.   The festival offers great opportunities for families, businesses and schools to get involved in supporting a local conservation project.

We’ve been harvesting seed and propagating plants in preparation for the festival.  To help us get these into the ground, join us on any of the following days and discover the fun of making a difference! Attendance is free on both days and all volunteers will go into the draw for a chance to win a Zoos SA family membership!

June 1 Planting Day
9:30am – 3.30pm
Suitable for schools and businesses forming groups of 10 or more.

June 3 Family Planting Day
9:30am – 3.30pm
A great family day with some exciting activities for the kids and a sausage sizzle for all our helpers.

For further information or to register your interest in Restore email us or call Tory on 0408 839 862.

Please note volunteers will not have access to Monarto’s public areas during the festival.
