A note from Anna Tolan, Director of Chipembele….
It has been a gruelling three months for our Saturday Conservation Club students undertaking the “Australia Challenge” to earn one of 14 coveted spots on the upcoming Tisamale Global Exchange! During Term 1 these students completed an essay, 5 assignments, research projects and personal Australia album, delivered an Australia conservation issue presentation and conducted a final interview. By the end of the interviews, it all got a bit tense. We tallied up the scores and called them into the classroom. I gave a short speech about how well they had all done and thanking them for all their massive hard work in the Challenge, but I could sense that all they really wanted to hear was the results. Students had hands clasped together, heads down and foreheads touching. As I announced the winners there was thunderous clapping after each name was read out, with the winners whooping, high-fiving, jumping on each other’s backs and hugging their friends. Tears streamed down their faces and some locked in a hug that seemed to go on forever.
Congratulations to ALL of these students who put their hearts and souls into this challenge. Even if only 14 of them will travel to Adelaide in April 2019, we will all host the lovely group of Australians coming to Mfuwe this July! We can’t wait to learn from each other and make new, life-long friends and experiences!
