As an additional perk of being a part of YATZ, we were allowed to partake in two electives involved with Adelaide and/or Monarto Zoo. One of the electives involves working within the bird department at Adelaide Zoo.

I was lucky enough to clean the food dishes, as well as actually prepare food for the various birds around the zoo. This was a privileged, as measuring the correct amount of food and ensuring their diet was correct is very important and is something most people outside the zoo would not be able to do. Some food I prepared included frozen mice, fish, fruit, seeds, meats as well as nuts. Although I was a little squeamish picking frozen mouse out of the freezer, it was a new experience and something I really enjoyed and am grateful to be a part of.
