It was time for our first big hands on job for the weekend. We split into two groups and loaded onto the buses, one bus stopped at the edge of Wild Africa while the other one continued on. Our bus stopped at the fence line of Wild Africa. As we got off the bus, the group was very eager to get the job started. Our task was to rabbit proof the existing fence, which involved a 50 meter roll of fence, thousands of fence clips and loads of shovels, grubbers and rakes. The task seemed simple, dig a trench 10 centimetres deep, two shovels wide and 50 metres long…how hard could it be? As we started digging we realised the task might be slightly harder than expected, we were trying to dig into clay, we battled with mammoth rocks and the sun was beaming down on us.
After about an hour we found that we were already doing the final touch ups on the rabbit proofing, raking over the dirt and clipping the last few metres of fencing. After an hour and 20 minutes we had worked as a team to get 50 metres of rabbit proofing complete. As we loaded onto the bus amongst the small complaints of pain and splinters we could all agree that we had come together as a team and completed a massive feat. It was agreed that we all deserved a pat on the back and some lunch.
