It was the second day at the gorgeous Innes National Park, early start but calm and relaxing morning. After breakfast, I was in the group that went with Mark (the Park Ranger) to remove old rusty fencing to stop the animals from injuring themselves while trying to get through. Mark showed us the location on the map and a few clues before he drove off allowing us to navigate our way there. After a few wrong turns, Mark drove past pointing us in the right direction, and we jumped straight on the job.
It wasn’t a complicated job, but it did involve teamwork and communication. We split into pairs to achieve the job more effectively as we had a limited amount of tools. Cutting wire was probably the most difficult and dangerous part of the job because when you cut wire it recoils. We removed all the wire so only the metal posts remained. Pippa, Dylan and I attempted to remove these metal posts multiple time before we realised it was quiet entertaining for people to watch us try. Mark, Lucas and Karen came over with a few twists and turns that eventually the post snapped. That’s when we realised that it would be easier to snap the posts not pull them out.
Everyone felt tired, exhausted and some of us were even hurt due to ‘attack of the inch ants’, but it was totally worth the effort. I learnt that no matter how easy or pointless a task seems, it will always make a difference and if it goes wrong don’t give up keep trying
