REAL beach impact at Innes

After an exhausting morning of walking after we popped a bus tyre, the group dug deep to head out to the beaches and keep making a difference. Our beach walks were both to enjoy leisure time as well as completing jobs. The main purpose for the walk was to lay out fox baits and to collect litter along the shore. The group divided into two, to cover maximum area along the coast. All together we covered over 8km of beaches.

Along Pondi beach, we hiked across the cliff tops enjoying the phenomenal view across the ocean. The magnitude and power of the waves put into perspective how small we appear in comparison to the earth. It was a reminder of what an incredibly diverse and beautiful relentlessly powerful world we are working for. It made the cause of our labour even more important. The group braved both wind and rain as we trailed along the cliff tops precariously. We descended down onto the beach, where we began burying the fox baits. We were eager to count the 500 steps along the beach to mark 500m, in order to keep the fox baits appropriately distanced. A seemingly tiresome job was made fun through our bonding and enthusiasm. Along the walk we also collected litter to help erase the environmental footprint of human impact along the coastline.

The total of 60kg of rubbish along both beaches highlights the desperate need for change to conserve the world. The walk also offered an opportunity to reflect and marvel at the biodiversity of the oceans forest through the collection of stunning corals and beach treasures. As the sun set across the picturesque beach, we trundled back up to the buses, proud of our efforts to bait and collect litter, yet also amazed that such beautiful scenery exists so close to home. Conserving such beauty and biodiversity is worth fighting for.

We took our collected rubbish with us back to the Zoo and returned the corals back to the shoreline, ensuing our impact was positive in every way.
