Returning Home DAY 23

The day we left was filled with so many emotions, it was hard to say whether I was happy or sad. I was keen to get home and see my family, but it meant saying goodbye to an amazing group of students and staff at the conservation club, who, in three short weeks, had become another family to all of us. We said our goodbyes to the club that morning and they sang us some songs that they had written themselves. The songs put into words how important we were to the club, and I know that every one of us MATZ felt the same about every student in the room. There were a few tears and plenty of long hugs as we said our final goodbyes. We headed to the airport and boarded the first of 4 flights home.

It’s hard to know what to say when you might be saying goodbye forever. Some of them would be returning to see us next April, but the rest would not. Although three weeks in Mfuwe wasn’t long, it was long enough for it to feel like home, and the connections I had made there would always be pulling me to return. After all that we had seen and done, maybe more opportunities might be here for us in Mfuwe, if we were ever to come back. This truly was the best experience of my life.
