Driving down the main street everyday, I admired the colourful ‘chitenge’ fabrics that the women wore. They were all bright and unique, and made the dusty roadsides so vibrant. The fabric was so normal to the Zambians, but so exciting to us and as soon as we bought some we asked the shop keeper to show us the proper way to wear them. She made it look so easy, wrapping the cloth around her waist and tucking it in, not even knotting it to stop it falling off, but my attempts were a bit below Zambian quality.
Our favourite afternoon activity was to see what new patterns were at the chitenge shop, and we couldn’t wait to get home to show our friends and family our new fashion pieces! However, I think I’ll leave wearing the chitenge to the professionals for now, to avoid any accidental wardrobe malfunctions!
