‘Wow that’s a big bird’ – Adelaide Zoo Adventures

The day started off with some of our morning activities and games, after 15 minutes the Zambians arrived. It was great seeing all of them again and to catch up. All together, we headed off to a building just outside the zoo entrance where we met the one and only Nic Bishop where he spoke to all of us about his experiences training animals. He brought in some really awesome birds, one of them was a Galah which would fly to one end of the room to the other. If the bird showed target behaviour, it would be given a treat, which is positive reinforcement. Nic also brought in a Red-Tailed Cockatoo, a much larger parrot which was also flying around being given positive reinforcement. After that everyone around the room was given a piece of paper with a bit of an image, in order to get into groups and go around the zoo and answer ‘amazing race’ questions.

It was amazing seeing that most of the Zambians have never been in a zoo before so it was an awesome experience for them but a reward for us seeing there happiness. Once it had finished the points where being added to find out who the winning team was. After the winning team had been announced it was soon time to leave – it was a brilliant day and certainly one I will never forget.
