It was officially our fourth day in Zambia and MATZ was heading back to high school to experience “A Day in the Life” of a Zambian Student. School starts bright and early at 7am and finishes at 1.20pm with a short recess break in the middle. Each MATZ member was assigned a Conservation Club student to attend school with, my students name was Esther. Unlike high- school in Adelaide, the students stay in the one class room the whole day and the teacher moves to them. My school- day consisted of Biology where we learnt about Mitosis and Meiosis, Religious Studies, Home management, where we made bread rolls and lastly Chemistry. At the end of the school day I had the honour to visit Esther’s village and family. Immediately I was embraced by Esther’s Mum and younger sister, both so loving and welcoming. After a traditional Zambian lunch of Nshima, spinach and beans I was treated to a village tour where I met the Chief and his wife also known as Esther’s grandparents- both very eager to learn more about Australia! This day holds a very special place in my heart and I’m very grateful to be so openly accepted into Esther’s family.
