NAIDOC Week Celebrations 2010
Help us celebrate NAIDOC Week with some fantastic activities at Adelaide Zoo...
You can learn some great things about our Aboriginal heritage and culture through various activities held around the Zoo and in the Santos Conservation Centre.
Cultural Activity Trail
Time: 9.30am – 5.00pm
Date: daily from Saturday 3 July until Sunday 18 July
Details: Grab your activity sheet at the front gates and go on a journey through the zoo, learning all sorts of great things about our native animals and their importance to the Aboriginal people. You’ll visit our Emus, Kangaroos, Koala and loads more so don’t miss out!
Native Animal Encounters
Time: 10.30am – 11.30am
Date: daily
Details: Don’t miss this awesome opportunity to get up close and personal with some of our gorgeous hand-reared native animals. You’ll meet one of our Children’s Zoo keepers and you might even get to touch some furry skin!
Dreamtime Story-telling
Time: 11.00am – 2.00pm
Date: every Saturday and Sunday throughout the school holidays in the Children’s Zoo and 6th and 16th July in the Santos Conservation Centre.
Details: Visit the Children’s Zoo Fauna Park and meet Naomi, who will delight you with her dreamtime stories! She might even show you the traditional Aboriginal Kangaroo dance if you’re really lucky...
Ngura Wiru Our Lovely Country Art Exhibition
Time: 10.00am – 4.00pm
Date: daily, from 25 June to 25 July
Details: Visit the Santos Conservation Centre and check out this incredible art exhibition. Featuring paintings and cross cultural projects by artists from the Anangu Pitjantjatjara Yankunytjatjara Lands, Central Australia, and Warlukurlangu Artists of Yuendumu.
All work is for sale, with part proceeds supporting Zoos SA Conservation objectives.
Aboriginal Art Workshop
Date: 5, 7, 8 July, 11am – 12pm, 9 July 1 – 2pm
Location: Santos Conservation Centre (just outside Adelaide Zoo gates)
Details: Experience a taste of Aboriginal culture and get involved in one of our traditional Aboriginal Art Workshops with Imbala Jarjum. You'll spend the workshop learning how to create traditional Aboriginal art and at the end. All materials will be supplied. Parental supervision is required.
Suitable for 5 – 12 years of age.
Free entry. Bookings essential.
Aboriginal Dance / Didgeridoo Workshop
Date: 12, 13, 14, 15 July, 1 – 2pm
Location: Santos Conservation Centre (just outside Adelaide Zoo gates)
Details: Experience a taste of Aboriginal culture and get involved in one of our traditional Aboriginal Dance / Didgeridoo Workshops with Imbala Jarjum. You'll spend the workshop learning some traditional Aboriginal dance moves and all about the didgeridoo. Parental supervision is required.
Suitable for 5 – 12 years of age.
Free entry. Bookings essential.
Traditional Dance / Theatre Performance
Date: 11, 18 July, 1-2pm
Location: Santos Conservation Centre (just outside Adelaide Zoo gates)
Details: Be entertained by the performance of the Imbala Jarjum dancers with their interpretation of the diversity of Aboriginal culture.
Imbala Jarjum are a dance group consisting of young people who represent the culture of the Peramangk people of the Adelaide Hills.
