A celebration of conservation, Zoos South Australia’s animals have created a series of ‘zoos-sa-la’ works using enrichment as part of the 2023 South Australian Living Artists (SALA) Festival.
Paws for extinction allows the beholder a moment to reflect on the status of species’ extinction rate, the importance of conservation and the incredible creatures that need our help.
This special exhibition celebrates 140 years of Adelaide Zoo and 40 years of Monarto Safari Park and features artworks and artefacts created by species from across both sites.
Enrichment gives animals an opportunity to use their natural behaviours as they would in the wild, including digging, scratching and excavating.
At Zoos SA, the welfare of the animals in our care is our top priority. Offering new, specifically-designed, enriching activities is stimulating for the animals and ensures they are happy and healthy both mentally and physically.
Enrichment can range from food puzzles to scent-based baths and tactile enrichment such as paw-print painting!
As a conservation charity, saving species from extinction is at the heart of what we do. We manage world-renowned breeding and conservation programs at Adelaide Zoo, Monarto Safari Park and in the wild. Our efforts have spanned the globe and include captive breeding, habitat restoration, research, wildlife disease management and caring for injured wildlife.
Paws for extinction is a celebration of these efforts, a spark to inspire the next generation of conservationists and a moment to reflect on the work that still needs to be done to save threatened species from extinction.
Adelaide Zoo’s exhibition is free to enter for the public – however we would love you to consider a donation to our conservation programs.
A selection of artworks will be for sale, with proceeds donated to Zoos SA’s conservation programs. Enquire during your exhibition visit about availability.
