Remembering Karta

Karta was one of the most beloved members of the Adelaide Zoo family, holding a special place in the hearts of her keepers and the wider zoo community alike. Born on 22 July 1982 at San Diego Zoo, Karta captured the hearts of thousands of visitors since arriving at Adelaide Zoo in November 1992 and was a powerful ambassador for her critically-endangered wild cousins. She was a strong, intelligent and gentle girl. Her keepers described Karta as very loving and sweet with a playful side. She was a beautiful Sumatran Orangutan with striking lighter coloured eyes compared to the majority of her species. She was well-known for her round features and big belly, and had a big sweet tooth. Her mate of eight years, Kluet, equally doted on Karta and would often give up his favourite treat foods so that Karta could enjoy them herself. Kluet is grieving the loss of Karta and our are team doing all they can to support him through this difficult time.

You can support Karta’s legacy as a Wildlife Guardian of Orangutans

We want to ensure Karta’s legacy lives on for many years to come and you can be part of that legacy by becoming a Wildlife Guardian of Orangutans. By providing a monthly gift of as little as $10 or as much as $50, you can help us to carry out our vital conservation work for this amazing species. Your gift also allows us to provide better housing and veterinary care for the animals we hold in trust, who are ambassadors for their species.

Please enter a donation amount.

Making a regular monthly donation is one of the most effective ways to contribute. Your ongoing support gives us the security to make long-term commitments to conservation both inside our Zoos and in the wild. Regular donations also reduce our administration costs so more money goes where it’s needed most. Donations of more than $2 are 100% tax deductible and we will keep you up to date with what your donations are achieving.
