The Mallee Fowl (Leipoa ocellata) is a large and distinctive ground-dwelling bird which inhabits semi-arid regions of southern Australia. Zoos SA is currently keeping a number of Mallee Fowl at Monarto Safari Park with plans to undertake captive breeding when the birds reach breeding age. The birds live to an age of around 25 years, so it’s possible that the population will increase significantly as the malleefowl at Monarto begin to reach breeding age and continue to breed.
