Sumatran Tigers are critically endangered with an estimated 400 tigers thought to survive in the wild.
Having cubs born at Adelaide Zoo will be of enormous benefit to the future of the species and of great interest; giving us the opportunity to speak of the conservation of the species and how best we can protect and support the population that remains in the wild.
Unfortunately, like many species, Sumatran Tigers are victims of deforestation and poaching for medicines.
The tigers’ forest home in Sumatra is being decimated by the building of unsustainable oil producing plants. With more and more land being cleared, the tigers face reduced hunting grounds, more interaction with other tigers and more incidences of poaching.

As a popular destination for animal lovers, we also educate and spread the word about helping our stripy friends. In particular, we (along with all major conservation organisations) advocate for Certified Sustainable Palm Oil (CSPO).
The Sumatran Tiger is the last surviving subspecies of tiger in Indonesia with only 400 wild tigers remaining due to habitat destruction and poaching for the illegal wildlife trade.
