When you work at a zoo or safari park, you have to look beyond the newborn and their loving mum to see the bigger picture.
As well as regular daily care and expert attention that a newborn animal requires, the maintenance of facilities and the improvements in husbandry and welfare all come at a cost. In a little cub’s night quarters is a bed to make cosy with fresh straw, heat lamps to keep them toasty and a monitoring system to keep an ever-watchful eye. But what happens when things don’t go to plan?
Unexpected costs can restrict our efforts for conservation and just at a time when endangered species need us the most. While the cost of living crisis continues to loom over us, we know just where to look to keep up motivation and focus.
Already in 2024, we have welcomed Spotted Hyena cubs, Ring-tailed Lemur pups, a Plains Zebra calf, Greater Stick-nest Rats, Mallee Emu-wrens and a Yellow-footed Rock-wallaby at Monarto Safari Park. While Adelaide Zoo has welcomed twin critically endangered Cotton-top Tamarins, a wriggling litter of Fat-tailed Dunnarts, two Black and White Colobus monkeys and Western Swamp Tortoises.
As a conservation charity, we rely on donations to care for newborn cubs, chicks and pups so as we head into winter, can you support us to care for every newborn and their mums, dads and siblings too?
