Mallee Emu-wrens are one of Australia’s smallest birds, weighing only four to six grams (that’s about the weight of a button!)
Listed as endangered by the IUCN Red List, they were once found in South Australia but the 2014 bushfires saw the local extinction of the population.
These tiny birds are now limited to three national parks in Victoria.
Zoos SA has spent the last decade working to safeguard the population.
After 10 years in the making, we’ve reached a major milestone in their conservation. Ten Mallee Emu-wrens have arrived at Monarto Safari Park, forming the first ever captive population of the species.
Bringing the birds to Monarto Safari Park allows us to study Mallee Emu-wren and build a valuable knowledge base to support the conservation of the species.
Good research is crucial in conservation because for endangered animals, there are rarely second chances.
While we don’t want to wish it on our little feathered friend, with your help, we can be the difference in whether this special little bird survives the next Victorian bushfire.
