Saving threatened species from extinction is at the heart of what we do. Over our 141-year history, we’ve achieved some remarkable results, contributing to the restoration of species nearing extinction like the Western Swamp Tortoise and Mallee Emu Wren, which we’ve successfully bred for the first time in captivity.
Our work on projects like Marna Bangarra with the Northern and Yorke Landscape Board has seen over 190 critically endangered Brush-tailed Bettongs reintroduced to a Yorke Peninsula conservation area. We’ve been at the forefront of a breeding technique called cross-fostering, to save endangered wallaby species. And in July 2024, 350 native trees were planted to help save South-eastern Red-tailed Black-cockatoo habitat.
And our impact doesn’t stop at home – in 2016, the Giant Panda extinction risk was downgraded from ‘Endangered’ to ‘Vulnerable’ on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species.
Despite our successes, there are now more species than ever at risk. Last year we saw a record number of species added to Australia’s threatened list. That’s more than five times the yearly average and more than double the previous record.
