Zoo STEM Teach: Learn to teach STEM meaningfully at Adelaide Zoo

Friday 19 April 2024, 9.30am – 4pm

We teach the teacher to make meaningful connections to STEM education at the Zoo.

Presented by:

  • Dr. Timna Garnett, Lecturer, Flinders University, Early Years – Teaching Specialist
  • Dr. Shaileigh Rowtcliff, Lecturer, Flinders University, Primary Years – Teaching Specialist

Have you ever wondered how to connect students, collect multimodal data, and provide enriching STEM experiences during a visit to the Zoo? We invite you to explore Adelaide Zoo as an environment for STEM learning and to support you in crafting an authentic continuum of learning, bridging the school classroom with the vibrant zoo environment. In this one-day PD opportunity, join us as we explore the STEM potential of the zoo environment.

The Zoo STEM Teach project has been successfully taught to pre-service teachers in South Australia for the past two years and we believe it will be equally valuable for in-service teachers in being inspired to select and create resources and experiences to engage children’s STEM education centred on the Zoo’s key messages. The workshop contributes to the growing field of situated learning for STEM education by continuing to highlight ways the zoo environment can be used to enrich STEM education in Australia.

This Professional Learning opportunity will address the following Standards:

2.2 Content selection and organisation
3.4 Select and use resources
6.2 Engage in professional learning and improve practice
7.4 Engage with professional teaching networks and broader communities
