Students will explore a range of Australian animals and understand how their physical features help them live in their habitats.

Curriculum Connection (ACARA v9):

Foundation Biological Sciences: observe external features of plants and animals and describe ways they can be grouped based on these features.

Duration: 45 minutes

Literacy Tales is a literacy-based program designed by our Education team specifically for an Early Years audience. Students will be immersed in an imaginative storybook, informative animal close-up encounter, and fun activities.

Duration: 30 minutes

In this hands-on session, students will explore how habitats are designed to support the wellbeing of animals. Through an up-close animal encounter, students will discover the requirements of one of our zoo species before creating a suitable habitat of their own. This lesson encourages students to use scientific observation and critical thinking skills, while inspiring them to support wildlife back at school or in their own backyard.

Curriculum Connection (ACARA v9):

Year 1 Biological Sciences: identify the basic needs of plants and animals, including, air, water, food or shelter, and describe how the places they live meet those needs.

Duration: 45 minutes

Students will learn how animals grow and change throughout their lifetime through student-directed inquiry activities focused on key species. Educators will introduce some of the incredible parents of the animal kingdom and the unique ways they use to raise their young.

Curriculum Connection (ACARA v9):

Year 3 Biological Sciences: compare characteristics of living and non-living things and examine the differences between the life cycles of plants and animals.

Duration: 45 minutes

This session focuses on South Australia’s waterways, specifically wetlands, and the importance of water in habitats. Students will engage in small group activities which encourage discussion and participation, as we look at the specific roles and interactions of consumers, producers and decomposers within the wetland ecosystem.

Duration: 45 minutes

Curriculum Connection (ACARA v9):

  • Year 3 Biological Sciences: compare characteristics of living and non-living things and examine the differences between the life cycles of plants and animals
  • Year 4 Biological Sciences:  explain the roles and interactions of consumers, producers and decomposers within a habitat and how food chains represent feeding relationships
  • Year 6 Biological Sciences: investigate the physical conditions of a habitat and analyse how the growth and survival of living things is affected by changing physical conditions.

Duration: 45 minutes

Curriculum Connection (ACARA v9):

Joint Program – Adelaide Botanic Gardens & Adelaide Zoo

The full-day program is designed to help schools maximise the educational value of your excursions, providing a rich, curriculum-aligned learning experience across two of South Australia’s leading science and nature education sites.
At the Botanic Gardens, students investigate plant adaptations across a range of biomes. Through guided exploration of rainforest, aquatic and arid environments, students examine how plants compete for light, water and nutrients, and how this has led to structural, behavioural and physiological adaptations. At Adelaide Zoo, students extend this learning to the animal kingdom, exploring how animals have adapted to their habitats through physical features, behaviours and internal processes. Using biofacts, live animal encounters and interactive discussion, students can use skills developed earlier in the day to compare adaptations and apply their learning.

Cost: This joint program is priced at a reduced rate, reflecting the shorter admission window to Adelaide Zoo.

1. $25.20/student, inclusive of entry to both sites and program fees.
2. Minimum 20 students per booking. 1 adult free with every 10 students.
3. $19.90/student, inclusive of entry to both sites and program fees for equity schools.
4. Min 20 students/booking. 1 adult free with every 10 students.

Curriculum (ACARA v9):

Year 5 Biological Sciences: examine how particular structural features and behaviours of living things enable their survival in specific habitats.

This program focuses on how habitats are designed to support the needs of animals using the Five Domain Model for animal welfare, allowing them to display natural behaviours. Students will learn about and consider animal welfare and enrichment, visitor engagement and interpretation, keeper safety and functionality.

Curriculum Connection (ACARA v9):

  • Year 5 Biological Sciences: examine how particular structural features and behaviours of living things enable their survival in specific habitats
  • Year 6 Biological Sciences: investigate the physical conditions of a habitat and analyse how the growth and survival of living things is affected by changing physical conditions
