Zoos SA
Zoos SA is a non-government conservation charity, every visit, adoption, donation and ticket helps to save species from extinction.

Zoos SA is the only not-for-profit metropolitan zoo in Australia that is not government owned and operated. We provide conservation education, as well as supporting and conducting many conservation, breeding and research programs. As part of our conservation efforts we run Adelaide Zoo and Monarto Safari Park.

Zoos provide an excellent backdrop for student curriculum-based photography and film projects, often based on some of the world’s most endangered animals, including threats and opportunities for conservation. Student projects about wildlife can be a powerful way of communicating the importance of animal and habitat preservation to their peers and local community.

Photography and filming of animals is acceptable from the front of animal enclosures. Modern exhibit design allows for close contact with many animal species in a semi-natural zoo environment. If you wish to experience or document an off-limits area of the zoo there are several behind the scenes animal experiences available for purchase: Adelaide Zoo or Monarto Safari Park

Please be respectful of staff and animals at all times.

As much as they’d love to help, due to animal care needs and existing commitments, keepers and other zoo staff won’t be available to contribute to your research or participate in photography or film projects.

When filming at the zoo, remember the following and you’ll be sure to make the most of your time:

  • Make time to visit the zoo prior to beginning your project. Educational support details can be found on the Zoo Learning section of our website. Please contact the Zoo Learning team to enquire about reduced rates for educational purposes.
  • Make sure you visit at the right time of the day.  Consider when the animals you’d like to feature in your project are most likely to be visible and active.
  • For additional animal information be sure of catch our free Meet the Keeper presentations. After the talk you may have the opportunity to ask some our knowledgeable keepers some questions about the animals and their behaviours. Meet the Keeper: Adelaide Zoo and Monarto Safari Park
  • The animals section of website is a great way to get to know some of our animals at Adelaide or Monarto Zoos before your visit.

Remember there’s a lot of information available throughout the zoo to help guide your project and properly communicate your message.
