A rush of excitement filled me as I imagined all the new possibilities that are waiting behind this door of opportunity. We walked to meet Jade, the zookeeper, and she happily introduced us to the inner-world of the natives that live at the Adelaide Zoo by introducing their names and their personal quirks.
Entering the yard of the Yellow-Footed Rock Wallabies and Red Kangaroos, with rakes and shovels in hands, it was our task to rake up the poo in the yard. Only once a week are the keepers able to get into the yard, so this is the only time for the enclosure to be thoroughly cleaned. Being YATZ, we powered through it and did our ultimate to rake up every poo until we were more than sweaty – Hannah.T even raked behind spots to give the yard a complete clean.
Unexpectedly, we were kindly rewarded for our hard work and Jade gave us treats to feed the Rock Wallabies and Kangaroos. She shared her appreciation, telling us that the task would have taken her almost all day, but we completed it together with two hours to spare.
It is truly amazing what positive differences the YATZ continues to create in every way.
