After a long day of hard work and amazing memories made, many of our YATZ group settled in for the night or stayed up chatting. Some of us, though, had a special job: in groups of three, we signed up for a shifts between 11pm and 1am or 5am and 6:30am and went to observe and take notes on the porcupines’ nightly activities for half an hour a group. Our groups had the absolute pleasure of witnessing these beautiful nocturnal animals in a way their keepers had yet to. We saw them forage and patrol their habitat, and even had some more curious members come right up to the glass for a sniff. And then, two small heads poked out of the den: two babies followed their mother out and began to forage along with the rest of their family, sticking in a protective little group. It was utterly magical to witness.
