Our last YATZ workshop was based in Belair National Park, and after a few games, we had the CFS come and tell us about what they do. We learnt about the truck that carried 3000 litres of water, which would only last for 10 minutes of fire fighting! They showed us what they had on the truck and let us get on it and dress up in the protective gear. We then had a race, which we had to unroll the hose, connect it to the truck, release the water for 30 seconds, then pack it all back up again while being timed. We all then got a turn of holding and spraying the hose to feel the impact and pressure of fire fighting water; which resulted in a some, more than others, getting a little wet. To experience the life of real fire fighters, we were able to place the oxygen tanks on our backs and breathe through face masks that without these would be life threating for the fire fighters in smoke fuelled environment. WOW.
Thanks to those that dedicate their lives to fighting fires and saving our people, property and environment.
Geoff Kay, a YATZ volunteer and a CFS volunteer organised this opportunity for us and for that we felt lucky.
