Much Loved ‘Chook’ the Superb Lyrebird Passes Away
Adelaide Zoo identity and YouTube star, Chook the Superb Lyrebird, passed away this week after 20 years at the Zoo.
Chook arrived at Adelaide Zoo in 1991 from Healesville Sanctuary and has since been delighting the public with his amazing repertoire of calls and mimics, which made him a YouTube sensation with nearly 1.2 million viewings.
Adelaide Zoo Team Leader, Brett Backhouse worked with Chook for more than 11 years and said the Keepers and visitors really enjoyed his antics.
“Chook used to dazzle the crowds with his mimicry, which included various construction noises, imitations of various bird species and even a cars engine starting.” Mr. Backhouse said.
“He also used to entertain visitors with his outlandish and feathery displays as his two display-mounds were right against the wire mesh.
“He was a great animal to work with and will be sorely missed by staff, volunteers and the public.”
Veterinarian at Adelaide Zoo, Lynley Johnson said, “It was noticed that Chook was quiet last Friday, and staff had been monitoring him closely, but sadly he passed away from age related issues.”
Chook was a little over 32 years old.
